Black smoke trail observed dissipating
N/A Not Observed

Multiple reports from my staff and local villagers of a 'plane crash' and a large bang however on questioning, nobody actually saw an aircraft, they said it moved too fast to see. Many people did however see a black smoke trail dissipating low in the sky.

No aircraft are reported missing. Report of a large splash 1 mile West of Matava Resort could have been mistaken as a humpback whale breaching. Whatever it was, it left a black smoke trail and made a loud bang heard for miles around.
Thank you Adrian Watt!  Anyone else see this?  File a report please.

Some of you that read this may have had the pleasure of knowing or working with Jim Gamble. Jim has passed from this earthly life into Heaven, The Infinite Dimension.
Rejoice in this news, as Jim now is.

Our thoughts and prayers go out to his wife Jan, mother Molly and his two sons Chris and Steve (and their families).

I have considered Jim a close and good friend, knowing him now for over three years, we spent daily Skype telephone calls sometimes lasting 8-10 hours! He was a very smart man with extreme motivation and skills. He was a true living man, a teacher, a friend, a loving father and husband.

Jim you were a blessing! A true bolide!

He will be sadly missed and fondly remembered. RIP, Jim Gamble! Amen!

Late August 2012 NEOs Close Encounter May??? Spark Some Meteor Activity

Some new NEOs have just been discovered.  Nothing very big coming nearby.  With the night sky not being brightly lit by the Moon I expect that researchers will find even more for the end of this month and coming September 2012.  Grab a lawnchair, blanket, bug spray and lay back and watch the show!  As always a dark sky is best.  Keep looking up!

12 August 2012

Perseid meteor shower peaks 11/12/13 August 2012

Perseid meteor shower peaks 11/12/13 August 2012

The Perseids have been observed for at least 2,000 years and are associated with the comet Swift-Tuttle, which orbits the sun once every 133 years. Each year in August, the Earth passes through a cloud of the comet's debris. These bits of ice and dust -- most over 1,000 years old -- burn up in the Earth's atmosphere to create one of the best meteor showers of the year. The Perseids can be seen all over the sky, but the best viewing opportunities will be across the northern hemisphere. Those with sharp eyes will see that the meteors radiate from the direction of the constellation Perseus.

"Regardless of your time zone, the Perseids should become visible about 10 p.m. local time, with rates increasing till dawn. The best times to view will be from midnight until dawn, your local time, with peak rates between 3-5 a.m. Observers with clear dark skies can expect rates of one per minute or thereabouts. Standard meteor viewing applies. Lie on your back (blanket, sleeping bag, lawn chair) and look straight up. Don't use binoculars or telescopes -- they have too small a field of view -- and don't look towards the radiant in Perseus, as the meteors in the direction will have short trains and be less spectacular. Avoid looking at the waning crescent moon if possible."

NASA with Bill Cooke: NASA Chat- Stay Up All Night' to Watch the Perseids

NASA with Bill Cooke: NASA Chat- Stay 'Up All Night' to Watch the Perseids!  11/12AUG2012

Editor's note: The 2012 Perseids peak is underway tonight! Here are some viewing tips from NASA astronomer Bill Cooke:
"Regardless of your time zone, the Perseids should become visible about 10 p.m. local time, with rates increasing till dawn. Avoid looking at the waning crescent moon if possible.

Escape the heat of the waning days of summer for an evening of sky watching. The Perseid meteor shower peaks on the night of August 11 through the morning of August 12. Perseid rates can get as high as 100 per hour, with many fireballs visible in the night sky. A waning crescent moon will interfere slightly with this year's show, but viewing should definitely be worth a look!

On the night of Aug. 11-12, astronomer Bill Cooke and his team from the Meteoroid Environment Office at NASA's Marshall Space Flight Center will answer your questions about the 2012 Perseid meteor shower via an "Up All Night" live chat. To join the chat, simply return to this page and log in. CHAT IS NOW LIVE! The chat experts will be available to answer questions between the hours of 11 p.m. - 3 a.m. EDT, beginning the evening of Aug. 11 and continuing into the morning of Aug. 12.  ...(more) http://www.nasa.gov/connect/chat/perseids_2012.html
