Dawn Mission Status Update
Mission managers for NASA's Dawn spacecraft are studying the
spacecraft's ion propulsion system after Dawn experienced a loss of
thrust on June 27. Dawn team members were able to trace the episode to
an electronic circuit in the spacecraft's digital control and interface
unit, a subsystem that houses the circuit and a computer that provides
the "brains" to Dawn's ion propulsion system. That circuit appeared to
lose an electronic signal. As a result, the valves controlling the flow
of xenon fuel did not open properly. Dawn automatically put itself into
a more basic configuration known as "safe-communications" mode, where
the spacecraft stopped some activities and turned its high-gain antenna
to Earth.
Engineers were able to return the spacecraft to a normal configuration
and restart the spacecraft's thrusting on June 30 by switching to a
second digital control and interface unit with equivalent capabilities.
One set of images for navigation purposes was not obtained on June 28
because the spacecraft was in safe-communications mode, and one other
set, on July 6, was not obtained to allow the spacecraft to spend the
time thrusting. Other sets of navigation images have been and will be
acquired as expected. The ion propulsion system is now functioning normally.
"Dawn is still on track to get into orbit around Vesta, and thanks to
the flexibility provided by our use of ion propulsion, the time of orbit
capture actually will move earlier by a little less than a day," said
Marc Rayman, Dawn's chief engineer and mission manager. "More
importantly, the rest of Dawn's schedule is unaffected, and science
collection is expected to begin as scheduled in early August."
In an unrelated event, the visible and infrared mapping spectrometer on
Dawn reset itself on June 29. At the time of the reset, the instrument
was gathering calibration data during the spacecraft's approach to the
giant asteroid Vesta. Some of its planned observations were completed
successfully before automatic sensors turned the instrument off.
On June 30, Dawn team members were able to trace the reset to an
internal error in the instrument's central processing unit, though they
don't yet know why the internal error occurred. By temporarily turning
the instrument back on, the Dawn team confirmed that the instrument is
otherwise in a normal configuration. They powered the instrument back
off, as originally planned for this time. Team members are working to
determine when they will turn it back on again.
After arriving at Vesta, Dawn will spend about one year orbiting the
asteroid, which is also known as a protoplanet because it is a large
body that almost became a planet. Data collected at Vesta will help
scientists understand the earliest chapter of our solar system's history.
The Dawn mission to Vesta and Ceres is managed by the Jet Propulsion
Laboratory, a division of the California Institute of Technology in
Pasadena, for NASA's Science Mission Directorate, Washington. Dawn is a
project of the directorate's Discovery Program, managed by NASA's
Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville, Ala. The University of
California, Los Angeles, is responsible for overall Dawn mission
science. Other scientific partners include Planetary Science Institute,
Tucson, Ariz.; Max Planck Institute for Solar System Research,
Katlenburg-Lindau, Germany; DLR Institute for Planetary Research,
Berlin, Germany; Italian National Institute for Astrophysics, Rome; and
the Italian Space Agency, Rome. Orbital Sciences Corporation of Dulles,
Va., designed and built the Dawn spacecraft.

A couple of months ago I emailed you about a meteor I saw. I don't know how likely I am to see another one but I walked outside for a bit a little while ago and I saw another one. A yellow fireball streaking down for about 7-8 seconds until burnt up about 10 degrees above the horizon. I am located in Rose Hill, KS and I saw this in the West.

Asteroid 2002NY40 as a source of meteorite-dropping bolides / next round 2038-Feb-11 02:09
Asteroid 2002NY40 as a source of meteorite-dropping bolides

The existence of asteroidal meteoroid streams capable of producing meteorite-dropping bolides
has long being invoked, but evidence is scarce. Recent modelling of previously reported associations suggests that the time-scales to keep the orbital coherence of these streams producing
meteorites are too short. We present an unequivocal association between near earth object
(NEO) 2002NY40 and at least one bright fireball detected over Finland in 2006 August. Another two additional fireballs recorded from Spain and Finland seem to be related, together
producing a fireball-producing stream (β Aquarids). On the basis of historical data, the 2006
finding suggests the existence of a meteoroid complex capable of producing meteorites. Taking
into account present time-scales for orbital decoherence, if 2002NY40 has large meteoroids
associated with it, such behaviour would be the consequence of a relatively recent asteroidal
fragmentation. Supporting our claim, the heliocentric orbits of two recently discovered NEOs,
2004NL8 and 2002NY40, were found to exhibit a good similarity to each other and also to the
orbits of the three bolides. The fireball spectra of the two Finish bolides showed that the chemical abundances of these objects are consistent with the main elements found in chondrites.
This result is consistent with the probable Low iron, Low metal (LL) chondritic mineralogy
of asteroid 2002NY40. Consequently, this asteroid may be delivering LL chondrites to the
Earth. Additional fireball reports found in the literature suggest that the associated β Aquarid
complex may have been delivering meteorites to the Earth during, at least, the last millennium.
Key words: meteors, meteoroids – minor planets, asteroids.

Gores Landing, Ontario, Canada
We live in the small community of Gores Landing, on the south shore of Rice Lake, which is in southeastern Ontario, Canada.
On July 1, 2011 we were sitting on our deck with friends when we saw what appeared to be a bright orange ball in the sky over the lake coming toward us at a very high rate of speed. It passed over us and had a constant sound th is hard for me to explain. The best I can do, is say that it reminded to of the sound a hot air balloon makes when the gas is released into the balloon but it was constant. I managed to get a very brief glimpse through the binoculars and looked like a huge ball of fire. There were 6 of us and no one could offer an explanation of what we had just seen. I think the time was around 11 pm. -Anon.

Athens, Greece Large Meteor Fireball ~21:20 30JUN2011
Athens, Greece ~21:20 30JUN2011. Yesterday me and my wife saw a "large" fireball on the sky. My immediate thought was that it was a meteorite, however it was remarkably large and you could distinguish a core of dark body in the middle with clearly shaped fire flames on top and bottom and a not so long tail of fire behind it (the sun was not set yet and there was a blue background). It seemed to fly at mid sky (as observed from the ground) and had an approximate West-Northwest direction. We saw it for about 3-4 seconds and it seemed strange as it disappeared almost as suddenly as it appeared. (not like the burning stars in the night that seem to burn off). This was by far the biggest and most spectacular thing I have seen in the sky. A.S.
Athens, Greece
I saw it too in Athens, the whole thing lasted about 20 seconds and it looked like it was half as bright as the full moon with a green colour. -Anon.
Kalamata, south Peloponnese, Greece
I saw it too! Just sitting down for a sea-side meal in Kitries (near Kalamata, south Peloponnese). Had just said to friends - maybe one of them should drive my car home afterwards as I intended to drink plenty of wine - when I shouted that I'd seen a meteor.
They suggested I was already past the limit...!
None of them were facing north as I had been. -Anon.
Athens, Greece Meteor at 21:24 local time
I also saw that fireball you refered too in June 30 in Athens, Greece, at 21:24 local time from the location of Ymittos Square in Athens, the direction I saw the fireball going was on a E to N direction. With a bright green colour, a reddish tail and orange, yellow coloured fragments.
From my vantage point I could see it was traveling through the sky at about 5 degress per second and it suddently fragmented and disintegrated 30 degrees from the horizon exactly north from where I was.
Luckily I am also an amateur astronomer and I could see it was coming from the direction of either the constellation of Lyra or Bootes.
Hopefully there will be enough precise reports so to be able to triangulate the direction, speed and location of the fireball. -Chris Protopapas
Athens, Greece
I saw this too, from my home in Athens but I didn't know what it was! Amazing! So was it a meteor or something?!? :s

Belgium / Holland Meteor 1JUL2011
Belgium Meteor 11.50 pm (local time) 1JUL2011
I also saw a ball of fire heading for the east. Rather big, and with orange flashing flames. It was on the first of july 2011. About 11.50 pm (local time) in Belgium (Geel).
51° 10' 0" North, 5° 0' 0" East
Duration: about 1 minute
(comparison: looked like it was a satelite on fire) -Griet Liekens
Holland Meteor 2 July 00:24 local time (1 July 22:24 UTC).
There was a bright fireball this night (captured by a number of the Dutch all-sky stations), but 30 minutes after the quoted time, i.e. 2 July 00:24 local time (1 July 22:24 UTC).
The duration in this report is rather long, so it could be a satellite or a "Thai hot air balloon".
