Meteoroids Associated with the Halloween Asteroid '2015 TB145' Could Put on a Spooky Meteor Shower

All eyes are on the "Great Pumpkin" asteroid ahead of its Halloween close approach. Asteroid 2015 TB145 still poses no threat to Earth, but it does continue to deliver some surprises. The latest observations reveal meteoroids associated with the asteroid are unlikely to hit Earth, but, if anything changes, they could put on a show for some skywatchers, particularly in Asia.

The 1,300-foot-wide asteroid 2015 TB145 was discovered less than three weeks ago and will be zoom past Earth at a completely safe distance of approximately 310,000 miles. Without any fear of impact, the asteroid provides an ample opportunity for scientific research, according to NASA. The latest observations indicate asteroid 2015 TB145 may be a dormant comet complete with meteoroids.http://www.ibtimes.com/halloween-aste...

Fireballs in the Sky: an iOS and Android app that allows anyone to report a fireball sighting anywhere in the world from their phone.

When you open the app, go to ‘report a sighting’. Simply point at the sky where the fireball started and click on your phone (a heads-up display and star background help orient you), and do the same for where it ended. You can then input a variety of other data, gradually building up an animation of the fireball that you witnessed based on duration; fragmentation colour; brightness etc. If we get enough observations we can determine a trajectory and send that information back to the you. The goal is to give members of the public a way of participating in research via their own observations, while also collecting data that has real scientific value. The app is free and available for iPhone at https://itunes.apple.com/au/app/fireballs-in-the-sky/id709019924?mt=8 and Android at https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.tw.fireballs (or just search for ‘fireballs in the sky’ on app stores).

All the raw data will be shared with any local groups (amateur societies or research organisations) that would like to participate in the project, to help with triangulation or searching for specific events. If you’re interested in participating please send us your details and we’ll include you on the app as a collaborator organisation with links to your website. The goal is to engage members of the public and get useful data on more fireball events. We want to share the data with you. Get in touch and get involved.

The main network project is funded by the Australian Research Council and is called the Desert Fireball Network. In a nutshell, having a network in a desert makes it more likely that we can find the meteorites. We’ll be putting 50-60 all-sky cameras throughout regional and remote areas of Australia. We’ve just installed the first 5. Additional information about the project can be found at: http://www.fireballsinthesky.com.au/. The website right now is bare-bones. We’ll be upgrading it early next year with an interactive map that will let users click on cameras and download images directly.

About Dr. Phil Bland-
Phil started out as a geologist, and pretty much got into meteorites by chance. It’s not something he’s ever regretted. He has interests in many areas in planetary science, but mainly in trying to understand the record of the origin and evolution of the solar system contained in ancient meteorites.

The comparison he makes is with geology in the late 1950’s. Plate tectonics – geology’s grand unifying theory – was just around the corner, but no-one knew it. All they had was a lot of data that didn’t really fit together very well. Planetary science today is at a similar point. We know how the Earth works, but we don’t know how it was made. The idea behind the Desert Fireball Network is really just basic geology – you need to know where rocks come from in order to understand them. The possibility that if we get this data for meteorites, that that might be a big part of the puzzle, is something he finds really exciting.

Phil has worked at a bunch of places, most recently Imperial College London. He spent many years trying to get funding for the trial phase of the Desert Fireball Network. After proving that the concept worked, Phil started at Curtin in May 2012 with funding from an ARC Laureate Fellowship and Curtin University to expand the network across Australia. The Desert Fireball Network team will be spending the next few years doing just that, and sharing what they’re doing with you.

The Lyrid Meteor shower peaks on the evening and early morning hours of 22APR2013.  If you have good weather and are patient you may see as many as 20-30 meteors per hour or more.  Get away from city lights, pull out your lawn chair or lay down on the ground and watch the show! Make it a family or friends event!
 The meteors will be coming from the direction of Lyra (see the map below); if you don"t know where Lyra is just look up and see where the meteor light show is originating from. Bring along warm clothes or a sleeping bag to keep yourself warm.  The best time for watching will be 11'00 pm until about 5'30 am (just prior to Sun up). The peak viewing time will be from 2'00 am - 4'30 am.'

5th International Meeting of Astronomy and Astronautics - Brazil April 19-21, 2012

  The 5th International Meeting of Astronomy and Astronautics will be held in Campos dos Goytacazes, Rio de Janeiro State, Brazil, on April 19-21, 2012.
   The Louis Cruls Astronomy Club of Brazil has yet again taken the initiative of organizing the 5th International Meeting of Astronomy and Astronautics and this time it's going to be an amazing set of interesting events, packed with this rendezvous. According to the latest news from Brazil, a special opening event will take place on April 19, at 9:00h, at the the Trianon Theater located in Campos dos Goytacazes. Further the meeting will include exhibitions, Digital Mobile Planetarium sessions, astronomy clubs exhibits, International Competitions, Star Party and many more.This sounds really interesting and I guess anyone wouldn't mind gathering such a variety of experiences in one of the most beautiful cities in the world together with both local and international astronomy folk.

All the presentations, workshops and exhibits will be held in IFF (Instituto Federal Fluminense -http://www.iff.edu.br) on April 20 and 21 in the same city. It is reported that the program "Um Passeio pelo Céu"(http://www.tvlitoral.com.br) will make a complete coverage of the event, which sounds great because you can have access to the happenings of event, even if you do end up missing the chance of taking part, in the worst case scenario.

Asteroid 2002NY40 as a source of meteorite-dropping bolides

A B S T R A C T
The existence of asteroidal meteoroid streams capable of producing meteorite-dropping bolides
has long being invoked, but evidence is scarce. Recent modelling of previously reported associations suggests that the time-scales to keep the orbital coherence of these streams producing
meteorites are too short. We present an unequivocal association between near earth object
(NEO) 2002NY40 and at least one bright fireball detected over Finland in 2006 August. Another two additional fireballs recorded from Spain and Finland seem to be related, together
producing a fireball-producing stream (β Aquarids). On the basis of historical data, the 2006
finding suggests the existence of a meteoroid complex capable of producing meteorites. Taking
into account present time-scales for orbital decoherence, if 2002NY40 has large meteoroids
associated with it, such behaviour would be the consequence of a relatively recent asteroidal
fragmentation. Supporting our claim, the heliocentric orbits of two recently discovered NEOs,
2004NL8 and 2002NY40, were found to exhibit a good similarity to each other and also to the
orbits of the three bolides. The fireball spectra of the two Finish bolides showed that the chemical abundances of these objects are consistent with the main elements found in chondrites.
This result is consistent with the probable Low iron, Low metal (LL) chondritic mineralogy
of asteroid 2002NY40. Consequently, this asteroid may be delivering LL chondrites to the
Earth. Additional fireball reports found in the literature suggest that the associated β Aquarid
complex may have been delivering meteorites to the Earth during, at least, the last millennium.

ELEVATED Detected NEOs Close Approach April 2011 Green Fireball Alert 6APR2011 7APR2011 (Asia)

Eight (8) NEOs Asteroids to pass EXPECT some fireworks in the sky from tonight 6APR2011 thru the 15th of April.  The observatories have found several of these in the past 24 hours.  Way to go astronomers!!! NEOsAsteroids 2011 GW9 , 2011 GP28 , 2011 FT29 , 2011 GR36 , 2011 GZ2, 2011 FT53 ,
 2011 GK44 , 2011 GE , 2011 GP59  will pass safely 10LD (Lunar Distance)
or less.
