Cold asteroids may have a soft heart
PhysOrg Fri, 08 Apr 2011 02:20 AM PDT
A new analysis of one of the most well-known meteorites on Earth provides strong evidence that the prevailing view of many asteroids is wrong. Rather than randomly mixed blobs of rock and dust stuck together, it appears that the asteroid that was the source of the Allendemeteorite was large enough to have had a molten core, even though its surface remained cold and solid. The new view also ...

GAM 2011 News - April 9

It's a big weekend for Global Astronomy Month 2011!  Here are some of the programs.

April 9 marks GAM’s ultimate observing event: the Global Star Party.  Of course, it’s B.Y.O.T. - Bring Your Own Telescope - but encourage even those who don’t have one to come anyway. All are invited, all will be excited.  It is amazing that when we turn our gaze upward all religious, national, cultural and political barriers fade into the darkness.  April 9th is the time to come out under the stars, bridge gaps across the seas, and join your brother and sister skywatchers in proving that the world is, in fact, “One People, One Sky.”
April 9 - Stars for All

Beginning at 20.00UT
If you have been waiting for your turn to leave for an unforgettable cruise across space and time, Global Astronomy Month (GAM2011, April 2011) is bringing to you that chance! Fasten your seat belt and fly to the stars, just connecting with your computer to this web page! Meet other friends online and share your thoughts with them. The Universe will look as never seen before, are you ready?
Reminder: April 10 - OPTICKS

: Live audio-visual radio transmission performance between Earth & Moon
Reminder: April 10 and 11 - NASA "Voyage into Deep Space" 2011

 - Live Webcast with Sonification for the Blind
10 to 16 April - Lunar Week

The Moon—Earth’s traveling companion in space—is an integral part of life on Earth. Still, few people notice it or recognize its importance to us.  Through out Global Astronomy Month, the Moon will be celebrated via MoonDays

. A week-long special series of programs, from April 10 through 16, will be dedicated to the Moon to help people rediscover our closest companion in space. Lunar Week takes place while the Moon is well-placed for observation in the evening sky.  As the Moon's phases and positions change during its orbit around the Earth, there will be Moon-themed star parties to observe the Moon by telescope and naked eye, educational programs, online observing events, competitions and a celebration of the Moon in different cultures.

New Smyrna Beach, FL meteor? April 10.

New Smyrna Beach, FL 7:45 pm meteor? April 10.
Hello, I'm in New Smyrna Beach, FL and I was looking out my window to the west at about 7:45 pm and I saw what I thought were plane contrails moving eastward but the smoke wasn't staying in the air and there were 2 of them and I thought planes don't really fly that close to each other. Then I noticed the trail behind them was an orange-reddish color. They were behind clouds mostly but when it came back out there was only 1 of them. I'm just not sure if they were meteors or fire balls or what they were.Thank you very much, -Kathie
Most likely you saw jet contrails lit by the sunset. - Tokyo

It happened too fast to be able to tell which direction it was moving, but i was looking to the east when in streaked across the sky from left to right (north to south i would guess?) - Roy

Long Beach, California ~9-10 pm Two Meteors 8APR2011

Long Beach, California ~9-10 pm 8APR2011 Two Meteors!
I saw a huge flash on the way to Long Beach, California from Whittier city tonight (4/8/11 between 9pm-10pm). My bf was driving while I was in the passenger seat. When we got to Long Beach near the ships and sea, we saw a bigger flash in the sky a head of us. Both him and I were starting to concern. We had no idea what it was. At first I thought It could be a lightning even though the sky is clear and nice out. The second time, it definitely didn't look like a lightning. We thought it could be a nuke! but of course it wasn't that. It was big flash. Did anyone see it?

Guest34 (guest): I live in Uranium City, Saskatchewan Canada. I just saw a fireball with a long tail moving south accross the sky just below the Orion constellation. It was about twice the size of a street light and lasted for about 6 or 7 seconds. That was at about 10:15 pm on April 6th.

Edmonton, AB at 10:15 pm APR 6 MST
Witnessed the same fireball from Edmonton, AB at 10:15 pm APR 6 MST

From Uranium city, Orion was situated to the SW, I witnessed the fireball to the NORTH watched pass from 15 deg over horizon NNW to NNE where it broke up and burned out above the horizon about 5 deg up.
This would put a fall somewhere around the Grand Rapids, Lac la Biche, Gypsy Lake area or slightly east. Was a slow mover for sure. - Greg

KNOXVILLE TN USA ~9 pm Bright as the Sun Bolide 6APR2011
I saw this as i was gazing at the stars on a blanket with my binoculars. I have no idea who to tell and I googled it and found this site. Basically I was looking at the moon and just below it I noticed a light which was green and blue. It got bigger and longer and wider and finally disappeared. My brain could not understand what i saw. I have seen these before but way way way smaller and not as bright at all. This was bright enough to light up the sky. My husband was inside and I ran in and told him what i saw he told me it was a metor. I said it had the longest widest tail i have ever seen and was just below the bright crescent moon, just below it this is why I saw it since I was looking at the moon through my binoculars. It scared me a little because it was as bright as the ones in the movies, could it have been a comet? IDK I mean was it a near earth comet? How big does something have to be before considered a comet??? I think it was a comet and not a meteor. -sophie

Huntsville, Alabama falling star 8:30 pm 6APR2011
Just entered a post on Lunarmeteoritehunters blog about a meteorite I saw tonight 4.6.11 in Huntsville AL around 8:30.  It fell out of the center of the sky to the North west, very bright, like an airplane, really, much brighter than planets.  It had a long tail and fell slowly compared to other "falling stars" I have seen.  The color went from white, to pinkish, to seafoam green.
It disappeared over the trees.  It probably lasted 5 seconds, although it seemed to last for a long time.

I was driving down Parkside Dr. towards Lovell Rd. In Knoxville/Farragut Tennessee about 9:20 pm on April 6th (last night) when I saw a huge egg shaped ball of light shoot across the sky towards Oak Ridge right over the tree tops. I was pretty freaked out and my first thought was "I just saw a UFO!" I think it must have been a meteor though... It was pretty awesome, very large and as bright as the sun. It was shooting across the sky for 3-5 seconds and then disappeared.
