London, Ontario Meteor 21OCT2011

London, Ontario Meteor 4:50 am 21OCT2011
I was out for a smoke because I couldn't sleep at 4:50 am . I was looking at the sky because I love looking at the stars, and have a love for astronomy. All of the sudden I see this huge fire ball falling from the sky it lasted at least 3-4 seconds. I thought I was crazy at first, but I couldn't deny the fact I had seen something. It looked like something was falling, then burst into flame, and it looked like a huge fire ball with flame, and then all of the sudden vanished, like it had burnt out. I had waited to see if i would see anymore but didn't. Maybe I'm crazy and was just seeing things, but i can't deny the fact that i definitely saw something shoot across the sky.-Kait

Nevada, Iowa Meteor 20OCT2011

Nevada, Iowa Meteor ~8:45 PM 20OCT2011
Sighted good-sized white meteor object ~ 8:45 PM about 4 miles south of Nevada, Iowa while driving south on S-14. probably lasted 2 seconds traveling south east approximately 55 degrees from the horizon. Since I was traveling I did not follow trail well, but appeared to leave a brief orange glow on horizon. Curious if others sighted this. -Linda  Thank you Linda!

Mansfield, MASS. Meteor 20OCT2011

Mansfield, MASS. Meteor 7:50 pm Eastern Time 20OCT2011
-Mark B. Thank you Mark. Any Details?

Medway, MASS. Meteor shortly before 8:00 pm Eastern Time 20OCT2011
I was in my hottub last night, looking to the South, shortly before 8pm. I saw what I thought was an airplane, but there was no sound associated with it, and the lights were not blinking, nor were they on 'wings' like the typical airplane lights (we frequently see planes from the hottub). It was traveling horizontally across the sky, I'd guess about 45-60 degrees above the horizon, going west to east (or slightly southwest to slightly northeast). Very bright (as bright as Venus), but there were 2 distinct lights, one directly behind the other, followed by a bright tail. It came into my line of sight from behind some trees, so I don't know where it started in the sky; it also disappeared into trees on the far end of the yard while still bright, and I couldn't spot it through the leaves. I had the feeling that the light was fading at that point, but I'm not sure. It probably took about 10 seconds to travel across my line of sight - I wanted to run inside to get my husband, but was worried it would be gone by the time I got back. The light was so bright, it didn't seem like a regular shooting star. And I was puzzled about the path it took - across the sky instead of merely falling. That's why I thought perhaps it was a plane - but it didn't look like a plane, with the lights in a horizontal line instead of across, and not blinking. I actually stood in the hottub watching where it had disappeared into the trees, thinking maybe there'd be an explosion or something.
I went online immediately to see if there was anything going on that would explain the light; but I don't really know where to look. I did get to a NASA site that mentioned satelites, but the only one listed for that night was an hour earlier. Googling again this afternoon got me to your website, and I noticed that someone from Mansfield, Mass. had noticed something about the same time last night. Mansfield is about 20 miles from Medway, and also a small town with little light pollution.
It was fascinating. I've seen plenty of shooting stars, but those have only been a fleeting 'shot' of thin light, and seem to travel a very short period at a faster speed(at least while able to see it with the naked eye). I've also seen Halley's comet, but that travelled very slowly. This was much faster, although not as fast as the shooting stars I've seen. And so bright! And 2 lights!
Very exciting. Was it a meteorite? Thanks.-Shirley  Thank you Shirley!

Blackstone, MA, on the RI border. Approximately 7:45PM. 10/20/11
Very long tail, traveled west to east and appeared to be closer than any other meteor I've ever seen. Additionally, I would say it lasted about 10 or so seconds. It was very bright and moved across what appeared to be slightly faster than jet speed. I wasn't exactly sure what I was seeing at first. It appeared to have a smaller meteor shoot out from the front of it and then died out. Similar to a firework.  We like to watch the meteor showers and they typically appear far away. This one was different in the respect that it didn't appear to be much higher than a jet would be. Obviously, that isn't the case but it was a beautiful display just the same. -Laurie
Thank you Laurie!

Lynn, MASS Meteor 20OCT2011
almost 8pm, standing at beach railing above high tide waves on lynn shore drive, look up to see flaming yellow object streak across dark night sky about halfway up from horizon, fairly bright like moon would be, moving much faster than a plane much slower than the usual zip of a shooting star, saw it move horizontally and slightly downward southeast to east for considerable distance like 30-40 degrees of sky (basically length of nahant island from where I was standing) for 3-4 seconds before sputtering tail burning out, never seen anything like that, surprised it's not in the news since planes all around, i see one post at same time without details from mansfield mass
Carl S.  Thank you Carl!
Carl adds: Thanks Dirk, I'm grateful to see other people reporting what I saw, and I would like to add this: Later: I see more people saw it too, and it's interesting to note that I am 50 miles or more northeast of the other reported locations. I saw it distinctly burn out over the ocean to the east-southeast, although it appeared equally large and close and low to us all. There should be security camera views of it from Logan airport and other locations. So I wonder if it was the German ROSAT satellite starting to break up a little before the expected date of this weekend,
because it really looked like a fast flaming plane, and others reported pieces actually separating in flight. ~Carl

Bellingham, MASS.
I saw the same one that Mark B in Mansfield MA saw (from your blog). Thursday October 20. I live in Bellingham MA and Mansfield is apx. 20 miles south of Bellingham.
And the time is exact because I called my husband on my cell which registers the call at 7:51.
I was sitting on my deck enjoying the fall air and I heard a loud swoosh or like a building up of wind but the trees didn't move so I thought it was odd. I looked up and slightly above the treeline I saw what looked like a shooting star. But then it got closer and bigger and didn't go out. It was huge; a big ball of orange reddish fire trailing a tail of the same color and width. It almost seemed in slow motion as it plunged downward. I lost track of it behind the trees. I swear it landed somewhere - it did not fizzle out or lose brightness.
It started south east and streaked east. I would guess it lasted at least 8 - 10 seconds, maybe longer. It was brighter than a harvest moon! Bright as the moon but red and orange! As I said, I heard a loud swoosh like wind gathering and a low rumble right before I spotted it in the sky.
My birhtday is Oct. 22 and that was the best gift ever - I will always remember it. Amazing and beautiful -Elizabeth  Thank you Elizabeth and Happy Birthday!

Gloucester, MASS. Meteor 7:50pm 10/20/2011
Looking south I saw something burning up, west to east ,flat trajectory, hot white and yellow, visible break-up and burn-up yellow to orange.
Duration: at least 6 seconds, about 30 degrees above horizon It lasted long enough to make me fear I was watching a craft burn up. -Graham  Thank you Graham!

Dubbo, New South Wales, Australia Meteor 19OCT2011

Dubbo, NSW, Australia Meteor sometime between 9:15-9:30 PM 19OCT2011
My name is Mrs. Meg Mckeown. I live in New South Wales, Australia. My niece and her boyfriend were chatting with me over lunch today, which here in Australia, is Thursday, October 20th. They told me that they were outside their apartment last night, Wednesday, October 19th here, and they saw a fleeting light, which flew across the night sky at approximately 9.15pm to 9.30 pm. It had a very distinct, what they described as, 'Starry Trail.' My niece found yr article, asking for notification, of any meteorite seen over yr country, as I understand to be, North America, in recent days. She gave no further thought to the sighting, because you'd specified, as she remembered, certain states in yr country. Upon further thought however, I thought I'd email, to inform you of the sighting. Our city, Dubbo, is approximately in the center of New South Wales, about 250 miles west of Sydney. My niece described the 'meteorite', as very bright, and distinct. It travelled a considerable distance, before falling to earth. Facing north, it's path was from NE to SW. I don't know if it's of any use to you, but I thought I would inform you of the sighting. Please contact me for any further information. . Yours Truly, Meg McKeown.  Thank you Meg!

Boulder, Colorado -Meteor/Fireball Sighting 19OCT2011

Boulder, Colorado -Meteor/Fireball Sighting 11:35pm - October 19th, 2011
I was in my back yard when I saw it. It was like a ball of fire - from where I was standing, it looked about the size of an exercise ball. The main part of it was a bright white with an outer greenish glow with a tail trailing behind that was also a white/light pink color. I saw it for maybe about 3-4 seconds before it either burned out or dissapeared behind the houses. Start location in the sky - about 65-70 degrees from the horizon (facing south) and ended about 50-45 degrees from horizon. Direction of Movement - at an angled downward direction - like going down a slide. Brightness - it was like that of the sun, but easier to look at. It is dark already outside here, so the dark sky contrasting the white brightness made it easier to see. Sounds - none Photo's/Video's - Happened too fast but my BF saw it too! He was w/ me. On your blog, I see that this is the fourth one spotted tonight! That's amazing! Do you have any sort of graph that tracks the increase or decrease of meteorite sightings over time? That would be interesting to see. Thanks for creating a place for us to share our sighting! - Erica B.  Thank you Erica!

Thornton (Adams County), Colorado Meteor 19OCT2011

Thornton (Adams County), Colorado Meteor 10:19 PM 19OCT2011
My husband and I were walking the dog last night and saw the bright meteor. We did not get any pictures or video.
Location: Thornton (Adams County), Colorado
Time: about 10:19 pm mountain time zone
We were facing south/southeast it streaked across the sky from the northeast to the southwest
I am not sure on duration time
It seemed almost as bright as the moon
It looked to have a long head (if that is the correct term vs tail of the meteor streak)

Denver, CO Meteor ~10:10 PM 19OCT2011
I was taking a walk with my headphones on Wednesday 19th at about 10:10pm and at the top of a hill going downhill going east at about 10PM Denver time. I just happened to notice something big out of the corner of my eye an looked up at it. I reached for my phone to take a pic, but I didn't have it with me. Here's what I saw:
It was coming from the ENE heading WSW and I couldn't tell how high it was as I only had about 6 -8 seconds to look at it. It was bright orange and yellow by the 'tail" but this was like the size of 100 airplanes if it was as I think, about a few miles in the air. This thing was HUGE HUGE HUGE and it just looked like a huge boulder going through the sky. I went WSW right over me and then after about 7 seconds disappeared. I could see that it didn't go over the horizon or get behind any mountains, as it was higher than that when I lost sight of it. When I first saw it I would say it was at about 60degrees above the East horizon.
I wish I had taken out my earplugs so I could see if I heard it overhead, but I don't put the volume up very high as it's really quiet where I live and don't need to, so I don't think I would have heard anything. That would have given me some judgment on size if I would have heard it. I did hold my pointer finger up to it and it was about 1/2 the first digit. IT WAS HUGE AND moved way faster than any plane could.
Why I say that it was about 10pm was that I called my wife *out of town* after I got home and I figure it took me about 20 minutes to get home and I called her at 10:38 denver time to tell her what I saw. I didn't call her right away, maybe 10 minutes after I got home or so.
I remember thinking to myself after it was done, wow… what would the caveman have thought of something like that. It was awesome!!!!! Never seen anything so bright colorful or HUGE in my life.
If you have any further questions, feel free to ask. I'm glad other people saw it. I was wondering, as I live about 20miles from DIA, would it have been on their screens? It just didn't seem to be that high in the air…at least not 40k feet…but I really couldn't tell you. IF it was that high..this thing was like the size of hundreds of airplanes. Regards, Still awestruck in Denver -gtcs

New York City, NY Meteor 20OCT2011

New York City, NY Meteor ~9:40PM 20OCT2011
I was driving Southbound on the Bruckner Expressway overlooking the New York City skyline.
A huge fireball shot across the entire skyline traveling from East to West.
I can't estimate the position of the object's trajectory but it was South of New York City.
This was no ordinary shooting star, it was much bigger than anything I've ever seen before and covered my entire plane of view. I did NOT see an impact flash after I lost track of the object at the edge of my windshield.
The object traveled at a high speed covering the distance of the entire skyline for about a second, maybe second and half. I saw smaller chunks of the object separating and burning up quickly while the major mass continued on the initial path.
My passenger was distracted at the time and was not able to observe the phenomena in it's entirety. She confirmed seeing a part of it after I made noise to divert her attention to it. This is indicative of the unusually long trail and size of the object.
The parkway was busy at the time and I'm surprised at the scarcity of reports. -Boris Martinov
