Alert! NEOs (Near Earth Objects) Asteroids  to Rock, Rattle, and Roll! Green Meteors, Fireballs and Maybe a Bolide or More!
(Issued 24JUN2011 1:30 am Tokyo by LunarMeteorite*Hunter)
This is an alert issued by this site; we will have a very close visitor, Asteroid 2011 MD, an ~8-18m rock to pass within ~12,000 km (~7,500 miles), about the distance of a round-trip flight from Washington, D.C. to London, England (NOT far by space standards), on Monday, 27JUN2011 at 17:01 UTC.  2011 MD was discovered by the Lincoln Near Earth Asteroid Research (LINEAR) project located in Socorro, New Mexico on 23JUN2011, just four days before its close encounter with Earth. Lincoln Near Earth Asteroid Research (LINEAR) is an MIT Lincoln Laboratory program funded by the United States Air Force and NASA.
(2011 MD) 2011-Jun-270.00010.05LD8.0 m - 18 m27.66.77
I expect we will see many large fireball events from accompanying astroidal debris, just prior to/just after, from today 23/24JUN2011 until 5JUL2011! Have your cameras pointed and ready to capture; and IF you have time get outside and observe and you might get lucky! Please help get the word out by posting a link on Facebook, Twitter, MySpace, YouTube, news outlets and forums, to my site; thank you:

Bend it Like Beckham! Small Asteroid to Whip Past Earth on June 27, 2011

Trajectory of 2011 MD from the general direction of the Sun
Source:
NASA/JPL Near-Earth Object Program Office

http://neo.jpl.nasa.gov/news/news172.html
Near-Earth asteroid 2011 MD will pass only 12,000 kilometers (7,500 miles) above the Earth's surface on Monday June 27 at about 9:30 EDT. The asteroid was discovered by the LINEAR near-Earth object discovery team observing from Socorro, New Mexico. The diagram on the left shows the trajectory of 2011 MD projected onto the Earth's orbital plane over a four-day interval. The diagram on the left gives another view from the general direction of the Sun that indicates that 2011 MD will reach its closest Earth approach point in extreme southern latitudes (in fact over the southern Atlantic Ocean). This small asteroid, only 5-20 meters in diameter, is in a very Earth-like orbit about the Sun, but an orbital analysis indicates there is no chance it will actually strike Earth on Monday. The incoming trajectory leg passes several thousand kilometers outside the geosynchronous ring of satellites and the outgoing leg passes well inside the ring. One would expect an object of this size to come this close to Earth about every 6 years on average. For a brief time, it will be bright enough to be seen even with a modest-sized telescope.

OMG, my husband and I both saw it!!! We live in Kerrville, TX. It was sometime around midnight, CST. It was falling north to northwest. It lasted approximately 3 seconds. It started bright white and as it fell you could see a red tail that then turned green and then it was gone. It was so large I could have sworn it was close by. It was incredible!!!!! This is why I'm on line now. Just had to research to find out what it was we saw and whether or not anyone else out there saw it as well???? -Bobbi  Thank you Bobbi!

Heard a sound somewhat like a static. No ending noiseVery Bright, - Anon

Austin, TX
I also saw the 06/20/11 fireball over Texas. I'm in Cedar Park (a subdivision of Austin TX). It was kind of windy here last night, so I went outside to investigate at about 11:48 or 11:50 PM Central time and looked up into the northwest part of the sky - just as I looked there the fireball appeared. It was large and blazed downward at a steep angle leaving a greenish trail behind it - I watched it do down until it disappeared behind the row of homes on my street - about a second after that there was a bright green flash that lit up the sky near the horizon so I'm guessing that it probably exploded before hitting the ground (or maybe it did hit the ground?). Didn't hear any sound at all - the event lasted about 4 or 5 seconds. Regards, John Zambrano
Thank you John.

San Antonio, TX
I saw it, too! It was almost midnight around the Pleasanton area and this fireball, like a water drop-shape on fire, failed from the sky so fast. It was a matter of seconds and it was gone. So beautiful! -Hipatia Thank you!

San Antonio, TX
20 June 201 approx 1140-1149pm (no clock outside pool area)
San Antonio, TX We were having a late summer night swim when I looked up behind my little ones and saw it behind them, falling straight down from the NorthWest area of town. It was the biggest I've ever seen. Bright green ball with orange around it. It seemed pretty slow, but I was too amazed, I couldn't say a word until it was gone. It never lost it's brightness. I'm located in the city, so I couldn't hear anything. The color was beautiful and the size was unbelievable!! ^_^ -Marsha
Thank you Marsha.

Plano, TX
6/21/11 around midnight
i was in awe and totally forget to figure out the direction
this thing lasted for like seven seconds!!
it was bright enough that i could see it during a storm!
it was a hazy greenish yellow with a green tail and it looked as if it split into smaller bits before i lost sight of it.
i WISH i couldve gotten a photo for you! -Ashlee rose

The Villages, Lake and Marion County, Florida
From The Villages in Lake and Marion County in Florida. We saw the shooting star at about 9:50 p.m. It was bright yellow with a huge fireball and a tail of light that extended a good distance behind. I heard no sound. It was clearly visible for approximately 10 seconds. It moved from right to left with a downward (fairly steep) trajectory. I was facing southeast. It was an incredible sight. Rev. Carol Rawlings-Chambers Thank you!

St.Petersburg, Florida
I live in St.Petersburg, Florida. (address) zip code of 33709....if this helps to pin point the location.) On the evening of Monday, 20 June 2011, I was sitting outside, as I often do, looking at the stars and hoping to see a "falling star". Needless to say, I wasn't disappointed! At approximately 9:42 (PM) I was facing east, when I saw the most beautiful "falling star" I've ever seen!! It seemed to be traveling slightly north-west to south-east and, when I first saw it, it looked to be "about" 35 to 40 degrees above the horizon. It was definetely moving fast! The "tail" was, at first, white and as it continued, the "tail" showed a brighter yellow, orange, and a little deeper orange color, not quite red. The leading edge, at one point near the "end of the show", showed a slight bit of black. After a couple of seconds, it seemed a "chunk" came apart from the main body, and it, too, had a "tail", but not as bright as the main one. It was quite bright. I would compare it to a quarter moon. Imagine, perhaps, seeing a lit match a few feet from you. I did not hear sound associated with the sighting. I would say that the duration of the sighting was 5 seconds. When it "went out", I would say it was about 20 to 25 degrees above the horizon. I don't know if this was a meteor, "space junk", or maybe even "E.T." (who knows!), but I feel very fortunate to have seen it! I'm sure you can tell that I am an "amateur" as far as sightings go, but I have searched the night skies before (mainly in California and Nevada) and I can honestly say I have never seen anything like this before. Anyway.....I hope this is of some interest, and help, to you, and your friends/associates. Please feel free to contact me if I can be of further help. My cell phone number is: (tele #). You have, by way of this e-mail, my e-mail and home address (address). Best wishes.......CONNI S.

Thank you!

Anyway, for details....I live in Seminole, FL (Pinellas County). I took the dogs out about 9:50-ish PM EDT on Jun 20th, 2011; the fireball came from the west and was traveling east across the sky. I did not hear any noises. It was BIG and very BRIGHT, and FAST!!! It was a bluish-green in color!! I kept waiting in hopes of seeing another one!! It was PHENOMENAL!!! I thought I was dreaming and didn't really see what I thought I saw!! LOL!
Thanks, -Angela B

Thank you!
