Meteor/Meteorite New 17NOV2010

Reader reports:

Chincoteague Island, Virginia 17:00 EST 15NOV2010

Guest833 (guest):Saw green fireball above Chincoteague Island, Virginia right at sunset 17:00 EST 15NOV2010

Orange Beach,Alabama on October 8, 2010
Karen HarperI saw a large brilliant slow moving green fireball move across the horizon in front of my car on a highway while driving from Birmingham to Orange Beach,Alabama on October 8, 2010 not long after dark. It was fantastically brilliant and unlike anything I've ever witnessed. It moved from my right to the left which would seemingly indicate it was moving from west to east. It was low on the horizon.

Baraboo, Wisconsin 6:15 a.m. November 5th, 2010
M. Bildsten writes, "I saw a Fireball on November 5th at 6:15 a.m. while walking my dog.  It was a low Fireball about 4 stories directly over my head and slow moving about 2- 3 seconds I counted while it flew over my head.  I heard it before I saw it that is what made me look up.  It sounded like a loud boomerang.  My friend across town said she saw a rainbow of colors and was much higher.  I'm not sure if she saw the Fireball or the Meteor.  We live in Baraboo, Wisconsin." My mother and I were traveling south on Route 15 near Gettysburg, PA just north or the PA MD line this morning and saw the "meteorite" that you saw.  I found your email address in a blog post that you made while I was searching for a possible news article on it. (contact info)

When German physicist Ernst Florens Chladni published a pamphlet in 1794 arguing that meteorites had their origins in outer space, the idea was received with widespread mockery by the scientific community. Now, meteorites are recognised as an important astronomical process. But it has taken geologists a long time to acknowledge their significance to the history of the Earth - particularly as uniformitarianism overtook catastrophism as the prevailing theory of geologic change.
Sarah talks to the Natural History Museum's Kieren Howard about the significance of meteorites to Earth - not only their impact on Earth's surface, but the effect they have on people. And we discuss the most famous meteorite to strike Earth - the Chicxulub impact. Long held responsible for the extinction of the dinosaurs, the Chixculub impact has been the focus of debate amongst scientists almost from the moment of its discovery. Sarah talks to a group of scientists who have been involved in a project to lay the debate to rest, once and for all.
