Baraboo, Wisconsin 6:15 a.m. November 5th, 2010
M. Bildsten writes, "I saw a Fireball on November 5th at 6:15 a.m. while walking my dog. It was a low Fireball about 4 stories directly over my head and slow moving about 2- 3 seconds I counted while it flew over my head. I heard it before I saw it that is what made me look up. It sounded like a loud boomerang. My friend across town said she saw a rainbow of colors and was much higher. I'm not sure if she saw the Fireball or the Meteor. We live in Baraboo, Wisconsin." When German physicist Ernst Florens Chladni published a pamphlet in 1794 arguing that meteorites had their origins in outer space, the idea was received with widespread mockery by the scientific community. Now, meteorites are recognised as an important astronomical process. But it has taken geologists a long time to acknowledge their significance to the history of the Earth - particularly as uniformitarianism overtook catastrophism as the prevailing theory of geologic change.
Sarah talks to the Natural History Museum's Kieren Howard about the significance of meteorites to Earth - not only their impact on Earth's surface, but the effect they have on people. And we discuss the most famous meteorite to strike Earth - the Chicxulub impact. Long held responsible for the extinction of the dinosaurs, the Chixculub impact has been the focus of debate amongst scientists almost from the moment of its discovery. Sarah talks to a group of scientists who have been involved in a project to lay the debate to rest, once and for all.

Hayabusa asteroid-sample capsule recovered in Outback
By Jonathan AmosScience correspondent, BBC News
The Japanese space capsule which landed in the Australian Outback on Sunday night (local time) has been recovered. The Hayabusa pod was picked up by a helicopter team and transferred to a control centre on the Woomera Prohibited Area. The canister, which is believed to hold the first samples ever grabbed from the surface of an asteroid, will now be shipped to Tokyo. ... [more]

— A capsule thought to contain the first samples grabbed from the surface of an asteroid has returned to Earth. The Japanese Hayabusa container hit the top of the atmosphere just after 1350 GMT, producing a bright fireball over southern Australia. It had a shield to cope with the heat of re-entry and a parachute for the final drop to the ground.
A recovery team later reported they had identified the landing zone in the Woomera Prohibited Range. BBC Science Correspondent Jonathan Amos describes the capsule's dramatic re-entry. Japanese space probe returns to Earth (14/6/2010)- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HQAbFv...

Japanese Spacecraft Set to Impact the Moon 10JUN09
Image by JAXA 2009 Projected Selene Impact Site
Japan's Kaguya (Selene) will crash into the Moon on Wednesday, June 10th, around 1830 UT. The timing favors observers in Asia and Australia, who might be able to see a flash of light or a plume of debris rising from the Moon's southeastern limb. The spacecraft masses 2,600 kg and it will slam into the lunar surface at 6,000 km/hr. No one knows, however, how bright the flash might be or whether it will be visible even through large telescopes. Images of the crash, if any are captured, will be posted on http://spaceweather.com
The Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency(JAXA) launched "KAGUYA (SELENE)" using the H-IIA Launch Vehicle at 10:31:01 a.m. on September 14, 2007 (JST) from Tanegashima Space Center.
The major objectives of the "KAGUYA" mission were to obtain scientific data of the lunar origin and evolution and to develop the technology for the future lunar exploration.
"KAGUYA" consisted of a main orbiting satellite at about 100km altitude and two small satellites (Relay Satellite and VRAD Satellite) in polar orbit. The orbiters carried instruments for scientific investigation of the Moon, on the Moon, and from the Moon.
