Subject: [MeteoriteCollector s] Fireball -- Southern Wisconsin

Roughly 15 minutes ago I saw several very bright flashes in the sky through a west-facing window here in Monticello, Wisconsin. A nearby amateur astronomer acquaintance emailed to report that she had seen a bright "red and green" fireball transit the western horizon just below a local treeline. There was no perceptible sonic boom here.

I do not yet have estimated azimuth or elevation estimates, nor do I know whether the track was right-to-left or left-to-right from the observer's viewpoint. There was no perceptible sonic boom here. Given the extraordinary brightness of this event, however, I suspect there may be a new fall some distance to the west."

New Hampshire Fireball 13?APR2010

New Hampshire Fireball 13?APR2010
"At 8:15 this evening while driving home from work I saw the most amazing thing. I was driving down Gilford Avenue, admiring one very bright star slightly off to my right. Out of the corner of my eye I saw movement, and shifted my eyes to the left where there was a huge fireball falling out of the sky. Now I've spent countless hundreds of hours watching the night sky, and I've seen literally thousands of meteor showers. I've also seen fireballs race across the sky, but never have I seen one fall out of the sky. The closest thing I could think of to describe it would be perhaps a single ember of a firework as it fell from it's zenith, only this was very large. It also left a sort of smoke-trail behind itself, also very similar to the way a firework would leave one. That trail lasted a good sixty seconds or so before it finally dissipated." posted by Pepper

Missouri, OK, NE, KS, AR Meteor Fireball 9APR2010

Missouri and Mid-West See Large Fireball April 6, 2010
The American Meteor Society has so far received 21 reports of a substantial fireball over the mid-western region of the USA. It
occurred near 7:55pm CDT on April 9th or 0:55 Universal Time on April 10. Most of the reports were from Missouri but outlying
reports were also received from Arkansas, Oklahoma, Kansas, and Nebraska. Most witnesses rate the maximum light output equal to that
of the full moon. A blue-green color was mentioned in many reports as well as fragmenting with both concurrent and delayed sounds.

Summaries of these reports may be viewed on the AMS website at: http://www.amsmeteors.org/fireball/fireball_log2010.htm

MEETING LOCATION AND DATE
------------------------------------------------------------------------

The workshop will be arranged at PGP (Physics of Geological Processes)

The workshop will be organized in plenary sessions of presentations that
focus on:

1. Distribution and characterisation of rock damage measured in specific
craters

2. The process of rock failure itself - how do current models
incorporate rock mechanics and what are the pros and cons of different
methods?

3. Meso-/micro scale damage e.g. shatter cones (length scale meters),
planar deformation features, broken crystals, and pore space destruction

4. Local scale - fracture-fragmentation zone near crater-origin

5. Regional scale - the influence of pre-existing fault patterns on the
crater shape

6. The relationship between fragmentation of rocks in the vicinity of
impact craters and their observed geophysical signature.

We intend to have oral presentations and workshop/discussion sessions.

Asteroid to Fly by Within Moon's Orbit Thursday
Jet Propulsion Laboratory
April 06, 2010

A newly discovered asteroid, 2010 GA6, will safely fly by Earth this
Thursday at 4:06 p.m. Pacific (23:06 U.T.C.). At time of closest
approach 2010 GA6 will be about 359,000 kilometers (223,000 miles) away
from Earth - about 9/10ths the distance to the moon. The asteroid,
approximately 22 meters (71 feet) wide, was discovered by the Catalina
Sky Survey, Tucson, Az.

"Fly bys of near-Earth objects within the moon's orbit occur every few
weeks," said Don Yeomans of NASA's Near-Earth Object Office at the Jet
Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, Calif.

NASA detects and tracks asteroids and comets passing close to Earth
using both ground and space-based telescopes. The Near-Earth Object
Observations Program, commonly called "Spaceguard," discovers these
objects, characterizes a subset of them and plots their orbits to
determine if any could be potentially hazardous to our planet.

JPL manages the Near-Earth Object Program Office for NASA's Science
Mission Directorate in Washington. JPL is a division of the California
Institute of Technology in Pasadena. Cornell University, Ithaca, N.Y.,
operates the Arecibo Observatory under a cooperative agreement with the
National Science Foundation in Arlington, Va.

International Dark Sky Week

From April 4 through April 10, 2010, International Dark Sky Week celebrates the heritage of the nighttime sky by encouraging people to turn off unnecessary lights. The event began in 2003 as National Dark-Sky Week in the United States and officially became international in 2009, the International Year of Astronomy. The key to success is the broadest possible participation.

Here are some suggestions for participating in International Dark Sky Week:

  • Turn out your outdoor lights during the week whenever it is safe to do so.
  • Light only when and where needed.
  • Encourage friends and neighbors to do the same.
  • Change lights to a more energy-efficient type and install shielded fixtures where possible.
  • Look for nearby star parties or events at a local observatory during the week where you can promote dark skies awareness.
