NOCTILUCENT CLOUDS GO WILD: An intense display of noctilucent clouds (NLCs) lit up the skies of Europe and North America last night. Bright electric-blue tendrils were visible through fireworks during Bastille Day celebrations in France, while the clouds descended as far south as Nebraska in the USA. Sky watchers should be alert for a repeat performance tonight. Observing tips and photos of the July 14th-15th display may be found at these URLs:

Canada Meteorite News- Marsden Meteorite Found 10JUL09

Scientists find Prairie space rock

KATHERINE O'NEILL

NEAR MARSDEN, Sask. The Canadian Press

Fragments of a 10-tonne asteroid found along the Alberta/Saskatchewan border have already been dubbed the Marsden Meteorite by excited locals.

University of Calgary researchers Alan Hildebrand and graduate student Ellen Millet discovered several pieces of the space rock late Thursday near Marsden, a farming village of 275 people about 270 kilometres southeast of Edmonton.

The search for the space rock began on Nov. 20 after the asteroid was spotted hurtling toward Earth by thousands of people in both Alberta and Saskatchewan. People in the Marsden area not only saw the fireball, which was as bright as a billion-watt light bulb, but they also heard and smelled it.

“It made a rumbling sound and it left a weird smell. This will sound funny, but it smelled like burning rock,” said Glenda Hankins, who owns the Marsden Hotel.

Besides sonic booms, witnesses also reported hearing hissing or crackling noises like frying bacon.

Dr. Hildebrand, a co-ordinator of the Canadian Fireball Reporting Centre with the Canadian Space Agency, said fireballs can act as radio transmitters, causing odd sounds.

He expects that thousands of meteorite fragments were strewn over an estimated 20-square-kilometres near the Battle River.

Grant Jones, a farmer who owns land in the area where many more of the fragments are expected to be found, is already warning interested space rock collectors to ask for permission from property owners before setting out on their hunt. ... (more)

Better Know A Meteorite Collection: Natural History Museum in London, United Kingdom

Written by Linda M. V. Martel
Hawai‘i Institute of Geophysics and Planetology
The Natural History Museum in London, with its combined collections of over 70 million specimens of minerals, fossils, plants and animals and its brilliant public galleries, is also home to first-class scientific research departments. The Mineralogy Department's meteorite collection is one of the world's finest and a focus for scientific discoveries by researchers based at the museum and around the globe. The collection has about 5000 individually registered specimens, collected from every continent, representing just under 2000 distinct meteorites. In the jargon of meteoritics, there are falls and finds. Falls are meteorites that are recovered after eye witness accounts of fireballs and thunderous noises lead to their collection. Finds are meteorites that are found later. The U. K. collection has a significantly large number of meteorite falls, about 600, perhaps the most of any collection. ...

Thursday, June 25, which is 44 hours and 58 minutes after the fireball was
sighted. Fortunately the material recovered was recovered in an absolutely
pristine state as the area had no monsoon season rainfall previous to my
discovery. I was able to very quickly zero in on the area with the help of
numerous phone calls and eyewitness reports which were all thoroughly
investigated with follow up visits. With GPS, compass and notepad in hand,
I put well over 300 miles on my vehicle in less than two days. The area
people were extremely excited about this event and more than willing
to offer whatever information they had about the sighting. I was born and
raised in this part of Arizona and my intimate knowledge of the country, the
terrain, the trails and back roads has proved invaluable in my search."

Russia Meteor News-Past Super-Bolide Vitim 24SEP02 2JUL09

Some atmospheric and magnetospheric effects possibly related to the Vitim bolide impact
E.A. Kasatkina and O.I. Shumilov
Institute of North Industrial Ecology Problems, Kola Science Centre RAS, 184209 Apatity,
Russia

Sensors aboard US Department of Defence satellites detected the impact of a bolide
on 24 September 2002 at 16:49 UT. The bolide had disappeared at an altitude of
30 km above the Vitim river, Siberia (58.21N, 113.46E). The total radiated energy
was 8.6x10ˆ11 Joules. An unusual infrasonic event with a 30-minute duration has
been detected by the Apatity infrasonic array at Kola Peninsula (67.3N, 33.3E) on
September 24, 2002 at 22:20 UT. The infrasonic signal had been detected by three
spatially separated microbarographs operating in the passband from 0.0001 to 1 Hertz
at a distance of 4000 km from the source. Estimates of the local infrasound velocity
and the direction of the signal arrival seem to be in agreement with the acoustic travel
velocity and the source azimuth. We cannot exclude that the Vitim bolide (or minicomet)
effects were as well appeared at some other atmospheric and magnetospheric
phenomena, e.g. in magnetic disturbances at high latitude stations, cosmic radionoise
absorption, variations of air conductivity. These effects are compared with some other
similar effects related to different bolides like Tunguska and Brasilian ones. A possible
nature of the effects is discussed.

Russia Past Super Bolide News- Tunguska 101 29JUN09

Soviet Academy of Science 1927 expedition led by Leonid Kulik
Tunguska 101th anniversary 30JUN09
Tomorrow, Tuesday June 30, 2009 marks the one-hundred-first anniversary of the Tunguska impact event in Russia of June 30, 1908. Wikipedia has a very good report on Tunguska:
... At around 7:17 a.m. local time, Tungus natives and Russian settlers in the hills northwest of Lake Baikal observed a column of bluish light, nearly as bright as the Sun, moving across the sky. About 10 minutes later, there was a flash and a sound similar to artillery fire. Eyewitnesses closer to the explosion reported the sound source moving east to north. The sounds were accompanied by a shock wave that knocked people off their feet and broke windows hundreds of miles away. The majority of eyewitnesses reported only the sounds and the tremors, and not the sighting of the explosion. Eyewitness accounts differ as to the sequence of events and their overall duration. ... Australia Meteorite News- Spider Impact Crater 27JUN09

Spider Crater, Western Australia
download large image (6 MB, JPEG)

Over the Kimberley Region of northern Western Australia, satellite sensors and airplane passengers alike can see a giant arachnid sprawling over the arid landscape. This spider’s not just big, it’s old. This prehistoric monster crawls out of the past as if to remind us of the destructive power of the cosmos.

The Advanced Spaceborne Thermal Emission and Reflection Radiometer (ASTER) on NASA’s Terra satellite captured this image of Spider Crater and its surroundings on August 11, 2000. In this false-color image, the arid landscape appears in varying shades of crimson. Water appears blue-black, namely in the meandering river near the bottom edge of the image. Vegetation appears in shades of red. While vegetation looks sparse throughout the area, the intense red dots along the river indicate fairly lush—if intermittent—vegetation lining the riverbanks.

Near the center of the image is the Spider, sunlight giving an oddly ghostlike appearance to the steep ridges that form its legs. Geologists long puzzled over what this structure was, but found an important clue in the 1970s. They found shatter cones—cone-shaped, grooved rocks known only to appear in craters left by meteor or asteroid impacts. Other clues to the structure’s origin appeared in the form of strongly deformed layers of sedimentary rock that showed evidence of extraterrestrial trauma.

Spider Crater rests in a depression some 13 by 11 kilometers (8 by 7 miles) across. Meteorite craters often have central areas of uplift, and Spider Crater fits this pattern, with a central dome roughly 500 meters (1,640 feet) in diameter. Radiating from this central dome are features unusual in impact craters in general, but important in giving this crater its nickname. Overlapping beds of tough sandstone that have weathered the elements far better than the surrounding rocks form the spider’s “legs.” So while Spider Crater sits in a depression and has a central uplift area characteristic of impact craters, it shows extreme differences in erosion, giving it a unique appearance.

The age of Spider Crater is uncertain, but its formation has been estimated to fall between 900 and 600 million years ago. If this age estimate is correct, the crater formed from an impact that occurred during the Neoproterozoic, a period of geologic history when, some geologists hypothesize, Earth underwent a series of global ice ages nicknamed “Snowball Earth.”
