By far the best I have ever seen or will ever see. Somebody has got to have video, perhaps a traffic cam on a decent hill. The sky was just beginning to show a hint of daybreak so likely better seen at Seattle or Vancover/BC  2 days ago I thought I saw a short/brief one at the same spot but I assumed it was just reflection of lights off my glasses and windshield, chilly outside. I will try to keep a camera at the ready tonight.

Meteor fire tail over Tacoma Washington on Friday evening
The sky was partly clear over Tacoma, on 3 December 2010. At 5:58 pm a large meteor track appeared in the sky overhead. The red orange fire tail started 10 degrees (N) above the celestial equator and ended -8 degrees (S) below the celestial equator. The object appeared about 15 arc degrees to the West of Jupiter’s position. The fire tail was about 3 arc minutes wide making it very prominent in the sky. The object was on a true North to South heading. ... more

I saw a very large greenish fireball fall sometime around 11:00pm (10:47pm if I recall correctly). I was in Southeastern Kansas (approximately 15 miles east of Coffeyville, KS) and the object was to the south, falling in a straight vertical line to the ground. We did not hear any noise, but it was bright enough to cast shadows for approximately 3 seconds and cause my friend (who was looking in the opposite direction) to turn around and look due to the intensity of the light.
It had an appearance somewhat like a flare. I did not see any trail or debris coming from it. It was, by far, the largest thing I have ever seen fall from the sky.

reply by LunarMeteorite*Hunter: If the event lasted 3-5 MINUTES? it was most very likely not a meteor... the typical meteor lasts under 10 seconds.

Ireland Meteor 28NOV2010 Updated Report and Analysis Meteor/Meteorite News 5DEC2010

Ireland Meteor 28NOV2010 Updated Report and Analysis
Alastair McBeath has compiled the following report on the 2010 November 28th 17:42 UT (+/- 5 minute) fireball and subsequent reports that evening.

Using the Armagh data as well as material submitted directly to the Meteor Section, and discounting duplicates, at least 46 separate reports were received of this meteor. Three more sightings may have been of this event too, but contained too few details to be certain. Two others from the Armagh list's reports were of another very bright fireball around 20:00 UT, seen from Counties Armagh and Derry in Northern Ireland, with a further fireball, of about mag -3 spotted by a lone witness in Hampshire at 22:26 UT that evening.

The witnesses for the main event were widely-spread across the western British Isles, with most concentrated in Northern Ireland, but there were plenty more in Eire, Wales and northwest England too, west as far as Bolton in Lancashire and Shrewsbury in Shropshire. Best estimates suggest the fireball happened within five minutes of 17:42 UT, and it probably peaked in the magnitude range -9 to -14 or so.

I've carried out a more detailed review of the available observations in the last few days, though regrettably, it wasn't possible to significantly improve the initially quite vague ideas of where the meteor may have overflown, as the data did not produce a clear, single solution. It seems likely this was because very few people saw either the start or end of the complete trail (fourteen reports specifically mentioned the end as happening behind clouds, trees or rooftops), and the fact the atmospheric trajectory seemed to have been unusually long, and long-lasting.

As a best-guess though, the meteor may have first become visible somewhere high above central to NE Scotland, or over the North Sea off the Scottish east coast perhaps between St Abb's Head and Aberdeen. Its visible end-point was probably over the Atlantic some distance off the Co. Mayo, Eire, coast west of Donegal Bay, or possibly further south. It is likely the only land the fireball flew over was central or northern Scotland and perhaps some of the Western Isles. This could imply an atmospheric trajectory in excess of 600-650 km, if correct.

An unexpectedly large range of visible flight-time estimates was made - between 1.5 to 2 seconds at the shortest to 30 seconds at the longest! This scatter was another factor in suggesting few people apparently saw the whole flight. Most estimates (74%) ranged from 3-15 seconds, with more than half (52%) favouring 5-10 seconds. However, 18% of the estimates still fell between 15-30 seconds. Assuming the long atmospheric path was right could have suggested timings in excess of 10 seconds may indeed have been more accurate. Even a meteor near the upper end of the usual 11-72 km/sec trajectory range for meteoric atmospheric-entry velocities, would have
needed 8 to 9 seconds to accomplish a ~600-650 km flight, for instance.

The fireball was commonly described as quite comet-like, with a distinct, round head and a narrower following tail. Another large scatter was apparent in the colours described as seen in this main meteor and its tail. The percentages of each colour-class from those who mentioned colours at all were as follows. Head or whole fireball: White 28%, orange 20%, green 18%, yellow 15%, blue 15%, red 8%. Tail: Red 28%, white, orange and green 17% each, yellow 11%, blue and purple/violet 5% each.

Sixteen reports mentioned some kind of fragmentation occurred, probably quite late in the flight, with many favouring quite small pieces being involved, often like sparks. However, two people who claimed to have followed the meteor to its end were equally clear that no fragmentation had happened at all. For once, there was consistency in that nobody reported hearing any sounds they associated with the meteor.

Any further sightings of this or other fireballs remain most welcome, and I'd certainly reiterate the call for any CCTV security camera images of the ~17:42 UT event on November 28, which was made earlier by the Armagh analysts.

It was approx. 6:30 pm local time, I was driving north on the eastern side of Colorado Springs & saw it in the eastern sky, extremely low. I would have sworn it landed only 10 miles to the east of me t was the most amazing one I've ever seen just b/c it was so incredibly low & close. What is even odder to me is that about 6-9 months ago I saw another incredible meteor, when I was driving & was at the exact same location as this one (Approx. Powers Blvd x Dublin), what are the odds of seeing a meteor entering the atmosphere a few months apart when you are driving (& the driver) both times at almost the exact same location. The other meteor however was in the northwest sky & was much higher. Appeared to be landing over the Air Force Academy regards, Simona

Guest625 (guest): I also saw the large, bright, blue-green "Denver" meteor from my home in Centennial, Colorado at 6:28 pm last Friday, Dec 3. I'm 46 and it's the most spectacular I've ever seen. It moved slowly compared to typical meteors that I've seen. It was about 15-20 deg above horizon, azimuth about 20 deg (NNE),and moved north or northwest. It must have been even brighter than it looked to me,because minutes later I noticed the sky was hazy and partly obscured by high clouds in that area.

We were in the mountains so I’m not positive about the direction but it looked to be moving downward from the north heading east. It lasted so long and was so big that we actually wondered if Denver would still be there when we got back. It was right around 6:30 MST. It looked to be white/greenish and was above the clouds but not so high that it looked to be out of the earth’s atmosphere. The object looked the size of a cantaloupe from our vantage point so I can only imagine how big it really was. The clouds lit up as it fell behind them and eventually it fell beyond our view since we were limited by the mountains around us. Even still, the event lasted at least 7 seconds, probably more. I’ve seen many shooting stars and this was so far from what a typical shooting star looks like that I cannot imagine that it didn’t cause some damage if it actually was a meteorite. I guess there is always the possibility that it was a flare, but it seemed far too high and to be moving much more horizontally to the earth than a flare would. We tried googling it when we got home but hadn’t found anything yet. This morning I saw this site when I googled it again so I thought I’d way in. Any idea what this was??"

It faded for a half second and then came right back. We were waiting for a boom or fireball but nothing happened.Very curious. Never seen anything like that before.

North of Austin, Texas  11:20 P.M. 2DEC2010
Guest583 (guest): I live just North of Austin, Texas & was outside having a smoke, around 11:20 P.M. last night, December 2nd, wen I saw that largest meteor(?) of my life. This was no faint shooting star. This was a brilliant, white-white/blue, object that left a substantial trail & looked to be "shedding" material in its wake. It was truly amazing, a sight I will never forget. Anyone else hear anything about this one?  Oh, & it was in the West,Southwest sky, moving from South to North, possibly away from me but I have no way of knowing for sure from where I sat. If anyone has any additional information on this observation,or any questions, please contact me. Thanks much, Rob (contact info on file)

The cover of the November 2010 issue of METEORITE magazine shows an image from 1315 of Prophet Muhammad placing the Black Stone of Kaaba on a carpet so that it could be carried by four dignitaries who were competing for the privilege of carrying the stone.  The cover comes from an article by Wadi and Jan Woreczko  describing black stones set in the walls of a mosque in Instanbul that local lore describes as meteorites related to the Kaaba stone.  With this issue of Meteorite, the production of Meteorite magazine moved to a new team of Derek Sears (editor), Robert Beauford (co-editor) and Hazel Sears (production manager) at the University of Arkansas .
