NEOs Worldwide Standby for Even More Green Fireballs and Bolides Through end of February 2011* to be updated as available
by LunarMeteorite*Hunter, Tokyo, Japan 15:39 8FEB2011 revised 20:51revised 9FEB201108:15 10FEB2011 23:42
Once again Earth will encounter an increase in meteor activity from passing detected and yet undetected NEOs (Near-Earth Objects) asteroids or their debris.  Originally for February 2011 there were 20 known NEOs with scheduled approaches near Earth.  Since January 1, 2011 there have been at least 28 new discoveries of NEOs to pass near Earth in February; this is an increase of over 100% in number for the month.  There are as of today 48 NEOs discovered for February 2011 and it appears that there may be another 5-10 or more added by the end of the month. Due to the bright Moon for the remainder of the month several NEOs will go undiscovered until they pass, hit the Earth or pass silently by.
This increase in discoveries indicates to me that we will see a marked increase in meteor activity for February.  I also expect that we will have a new meteorite this month.
Have your cameras ready and if possible get outside to watch.  Expect to see worldwide several green meteor fireballs and bolides during, just prior to, and just after 19FEB-23FEB, and until the end of the month.  If more findings come in about other newly found NEOs I will post.  For the most current information see the NASA NEOs site: http://neo.jpl.nasa.gov/ca/

Rats Rule, Dogs Left to Drool for Meteorites!
Belgian-trained African Giant Pouched Rats now being used to search for landmines will soon be trained by meteorite hunters to hunt for meteorites, predicts LunarMeteorite*Hunter, Tokyo, Japan. Rats have an acute sense for smell and are extremely accurate in detection; rat "packs" will soon be used to search meteorite strewn fields in Brazil, Slovakia, Canada, the United States and elsewhere, the US and elsewhere (Rats! Alberta prohibited by Law source:RMCA (Rat and Mouse Club of America).
The Belgians have been working on this technique for years and will be the first to demonstrate in the field. It is rumoured that NASA (USA), JAXA (Japan) and ESA (Europe) are planning rapid response teams of rats for recovery of newly fallen meteorites.
" Dogs will soon be out of use due to their large size and food consumption; rats are "in"". Hopper The Meteorite Dog and Brix The Dog will soon only be on late night TV re-runs?

NYC Fireball sighting - 2/14/10
I live in Manhattan on the 27th floor of my building. Was eating lunch around 12:45pm, and I have a view of the Empire State Building. Just to the left of it, I saw a bright orange flash and then a green streak that lasted what seemed to be less than a second. - Shawn Wickens

How can I find out of others saw the same thing as me today?
At approximately 12:50 p.m. in clear blue skies Nassau County, Long Island, New York while driving I saw a huge fireball (?) with a bright white front and long silver metallic tail. It lasted about 5 seconds or so after I noticed it. It was headed straight down and was incredibly beautiful. I realize it is difficult to determine the height of objects in the sky but this seems to be right above the tree and roof tops. I had no idea what it was since I didn't know these things were visible during the day. I became quite alarmed immediately thinking it was some sort of terrorist attack and became concerned for my childrens' safety. I pulled over after it vanished and rolled my window down waiting to hear a crash, smell smoke or hear sirens. There was nothing and it was gone! I posted about in on my FB but everyone thought I was nuts! Tell me I wasn't seeing things lol!

Approximately 12:50 p.m. today 2/14/11 clear blue skies in Nassau County, Long Island, New York while driving I saw a huge fireball(?) with a bright white front and long brilliant metallic silver tail headed almost directly down. It lasted about 4-5 seconds after I initially noticed it and then it was gone. I have NEVER seen anything like it. It looked incredibly close to the tree and roof tops but I realize the hight of objects in the sky cannot be accurately judged. I pulled over certain to hear some sort of explosion, to smell smoke or hear sirens. There was nothing. It was amazingly fast, beautiful and then gone.
