Contrary to SA News reports-
The object was NOT the size of a marble. This object was in the order of 10s-100s kg, maybe up to half the size of a VW bug or a full bug, to be seen in daytime and produce sonics.  Hopefully they will find a competent scientist to comment.  Since there was no fragmentation reported I suspect that it may be an iron meteoroid that entered the atmosphere.  I also suspect given the reports that we have a new meteorite to be found on the ground.
My Cell recordered the area as Mitchells Plain, but I was travelling from Ottery towards Athlone and spotted the meteor at corner of Ottery Road and Lansdowne Roads. It was amazing but a bit too late for a video it came down too fast and just suddenly there was a big ball of white smoke.

2013 THE Year of Meteors, Asteroids, Comets, and MORE!!

24 August 2011

Bolide over Hout Bay, Cape Town, South Africa 23AUG2011

Bolide Meteor over Hout Bay, Cape Town, South Africa 11:00 pm 23AUG2011

11 o'clock last night 23 August 2011,
My neighbour and I saw, what can only be described as a bright ball of light, with a very smooth
hill called Mount Rhodes at the northern end of Hout Bay, in Cape Town South Africa. We only saw a 2 to 3 seconds of it before brilliant blue tail shooting across the sky at a very low altitude. It seemed to have just vanished as it headed towards a little it disappeared.
Apologies for the quality of the image I through together, but its the closest I could get to represent what we saw.
Kind Regards, Victor Rogowski   Thank you Victor!  I appreciate the artwork!
