Thibodaux Louisiana Bright Fireball 10NOV2010 Other Meteor Reports Meteor/Meteorite News 11NOV2010

Readers Meteor Sighting Reports:

Thibodaux La.(Southwest of New Orleans) 9:30pm CST 10NOV2010- Bright Fireball
"I'm from Thibodaux La.(Southwest of New Orleans) and I saw a very bright light streak across the sky tonight (Wednesday 11/9/10) at about 9:30pm. I was outside in my back yard and looking down when my whole yard lit up. I then looked up and saw a very bright ball streaking across the sky (I presume a meteor or space debris) with a long orange trail behind it. The white light burned out but, the long orange trail behind it glowed for about 2 to 3 seconds until it burned out. The event lasted about 4 to 5 seconds. It looked like something burning very hot across the sky. It was coming from the Northwest and heading to the Southeast but actually died out right overhead. I didn't hear a sound, although I thought I would possibly hear a crash or see something fall to the ground but, it seemed to disintegrate above me." -Morgan  (contact info)

AMAZING FIREBALL OVER BATON ROUGE, LA 10NOV@9:30PM
My friend here at work just told me about an amazing earth grazer he saw last night around 9:30PM-10PM from a field behind his apartment as he walked his dog...
He saw it flash overhead and it was bright enough to see in his sky over Burbank and Bluebonnet in Baton Rouge. It appeared to be heading SE. Not only did the flash catch his attention, but it left a vapor trail that covered almost a full 90 degrees of the sky! It dissapated quickly within a second. Here's the really amazing part.. he heard either a low sonic boom or impact a few seconds later!!!! (mcramb please email me). mcaramb (no contact info)

New Orleans, Louisiana
Last night (11/10/10) at about 9:20-9:30 PM, I was near Lake Pontchartrain in New Orleans and saw what I guess was a meteor shoot from East to NW very low overhead. It was bright neon green with a green tail that changed to orange as it sped by. It seemed to be about the size of a softball, and I thought it must be some kind of large Roman candle flare because it was so close to earth (not way up high like shooting stars). It seemed to be just a little higher than the roofline of my 2-story house. It lasted just a few seconds. I expected to hear something when it hit the ground, but I never heard or saw it because it fell behind a house out of my line of sight (or else it just burned up). I've seen many, many shooting stars in my 50+ years, but NEVER anything even close to this! It was so LOW and BIG! I doubt I'll ever experience it again. Did anyone else by chance see this? - NolaLady (no contact info)

I heard no sound and can not tell how far away it was. It lasted about 2 seconds but I could not see where it began due to the roof overhead." Anon

Rats Rule, Dogs Left to Drool for Meteorites!
Belgian trained African Giant Pouched Rats now being used to search for landmines will soon be trained by meteorite hunters to hunt for meteorites, predicts LunarMeteorite*Hunter, Tokyo, Japan. Rats have an acute sense for smell and are extremely accurate in detection; rat "packs" will soon be used to search meteorite strewn fields in Brazil, Slovakia, Canada, the United States and elsewhere, e (Rats! Alberta. Canada rats are prohibited by Law; source: RMCA (Rat and Mouse Club of America).
The Belgians have been working on this technique for years and will be the first to demonstrate in the field. It is rumoured that NASA (USA), JAXA (Japan) and ESA (Europe) are planning rapid response teams of rats for recovery of newly fallen meteorites.

"In the space of about an hour last night (3-4UT Nov 9), from our back yard north of Houston, my wife and I noticed four magnitude 2ish slow meteors that appeared to track back to an area near Nu Andromedae. At Meteor Showers Online I read that the current radiant of the Andromidids is RA=26 deg, DEC=+37 deg which is inside a 10 degree radius of my estimate. I do not even see them listed at the AMS Showers page. Could the 4 we saw be fragments from the late comet Biela?" - Kenneth Drake (contact info)

Fireball over Northern Kentucky 5:40PM EST 8NOV2010
"I was riding on the bus from Cincinnati to my home in Fort Wright, Kentucky about 5:40 PM EST on 11/08/2010m when I noticed a vapor trail lit up by the setting sun to the west of me.  I could still see it when I got off the bus and was walking down my street.  It had the appearance of a comet but I could tell it was somethng in the atmosphere.  The vapor trail was lengthening and shortening while I was watching.  I saw this for about six (6) minutes before it burned up or disappeared. Was this a meteorite of some space junk burning up? Regards, Michael Sheehy" (contact details)

Evansville Indiana 5:30 7NOV2010
"I saw the 11/7 fireball. I live in Evansville, Indiana. I believe it was around 5:30 pm daylight savings time. Looked like it was just falling straight down to the north. Had small trail behind it and looked emerald green. It seemed extremely close, in fact, i thought it was fireworks for a split second.   It seemed to burn out in the sky on the way down with what appeared to be an explosion, although i didnt hear anything. Lasted about 3-5 seconds." - Trista (contact info)

Prattville, Alabama 6:40 CST 7NOV2010
"I also saw the meteor that everyone is reporting on Sunday  evening of Nov 7, 2010.   I am an environmental scientist and have spent a lifetime in the outdoors but I have never seen any meteor that appeared so large.   At approximately 6:40 or so central time  I was traveling east near Prattville, Alabama (North of Montgomery).  The fireball appeared at about 30 degrees in the Southeast night sky.   It appeared to being traveling  to the southsouth west of prattville Alabama.   The angle of fall seemed "steep" perhaps at 70 degrees or so.   I saw the meteor traveling this path for about  2 seconds or so.
Currently I am looking out a window and I see a standard telephone pole with a light attached about 150 yards away.   The meteor seemed to be approximately the same size as the telephone  pole light but at a distance of what appeared to be 30 miles or so away.    I did not see a impact flash but there did appear to be a fire trail.  To be honest I was kind of scared or made uneasy, due to what appeared to be a very large meteor nearing impact.   I felt like it was very possible that the meteor made impact  southwest of montgomery alabama." - Allen C (contact info, tele) - Good observations!

POSSIBLE COMET OUTBURST:
A comet discovered just a few
days ago by amateur astronomers in Japan is gliding by
Saturn in the pre-dawn sky.  Comet Ikeya-Murakami
(C/2010 V1) is not visible to the unaided eye, but
observers say it is a fairly easy target for backyard
telescopes.  Images obtained over the weekend reveal
what appears to be an outburst in progress.  The comet's
coma (atmosphere) bears a striking resemblance to the
coma of Comet Holmes, which famously exploded in 2007.

N.C. booms: Methane? Meteor? Cause still unclear
The Virginian-Pilot Mon, 08 Nov 2010 15:49 PM PST
WILMINGTON, N.C. It's not clear what caused those booms that rattled North Carolina's south coast last week. But methane escaping from the ocean or even a small meteorite have been suggested as culprits. John Huntsman is an associate professor of geology at the University of North Carolina-Wilmington. He heard a boom on Friday but isn't sure of the cause. There was a second Saturday.
