Dubai Astronomy Group Persides Meteor Shower Night Party 13/14AUG2015

The Event

Astronomy lovers are in for a treat this summer as the, all-time favourite, Perseid Meteor Shower peaks coinciding with the new moon on August 13. The Perseid meteor shower is perhaps the most spectacular one for the Northern Hemisphere and gradually builds to a peak from 50 to 100 meteors per hour in a dark sky.

No special equipment is required to enjoy this spectacle of nature. To make things easier, you don’t even have to be an astronomy expert. We however do recommend that you bring along some mats or chairs to be comfortably seated while gazing into the night sky. And as icing on the cake, astronomers from Dubai Astronomy Group will be available to assist you to observe celestial bodies, such as the planet Saturn and the stars of the Summer Triangle, through their telescopes.

In our day and age of expanded artificial lighting, fewer and fewer people have actually seen the wonders of an inky black night sky. So make a date with the Perseid meteor shower and witness one of nature’s most remarkable sky shows!

The Venue – Mercure Grand Jebel Hafeet, Al Ain

Mercure Grand Jebel Hafeet is a unique mountain oasis resort at the top of historical Jebel Hafeet at the lofty height of 3,000 feet. The hotel features 124 rooms and suites offering ultimate comfort and tranquility in a verdant and spectacular setting with good view, free of noise & air pollution, family-oriented. The hotel is well-known for local and international market in both Business and Leisure Segments. Romantic stay for Honeymooners, Team-building activities & cool climate during summer.

Dubai Astronomy Group Event 23/24MAY2014 Camelopardalis Meteor Shower

Dubai Astronomy Group Event 23/24MAY2014 Camelopardalis Meteor Shower

Location: Bab Al Shams Desert Resort, Click Here for Location map.
Event start: 21.00pm of Friday 23rd May Event ends: Sunrise on Saturday 24th May

Join us to witness a potentially ‘once in a lifetime’ event. Predictions suggest that a new meteor shower will be seen on the 24th May as Earth is expected to cross the debris trail left by comet 209P/Linear. Based on professional forecasts this meteor shower could turn out to be a unique meteor storm. A meteor storm could see dense outbursts of bright multiple meteors and provide in excess of 1000 shooting stars an hour during its peak. Lowest expectation would be 60-100 meteors an hour. You won’t want to miss this…

This Dubai Astronomy Group event will also provide visitors an opportunity to look through the club telescopes at other celestial objects including; Saturn, Mars, double stars, globular clusters, nebula and other deep sky objects. In addition, the Moon rises in the morning, just before sunrise, in a close conjunction with the planet Venus. The event will feature live presentations and videos about the night sky plus featured online broadcasts to the wider international astronomy community.

The event is working in collaboration with Astronomers without Borders and will feature live links between Dubai and California.

The event is also supporting a global broadcast from Slooh Telescopes. Slooh operate a network of robotically controlled telescopes which are used by its worldwide membership for Astronomy imaging and observing. Slooh is a major worldwide outreach facilitator of public astronomy and hosts regular online events. Dubai Astronomy Group is a listed partner.

The event will also include periodic Live Google+ Hangouts On Air and will be available on YouTube for those unable to attend in person;

Venus and Jupiter in Conjunction 15MAR2012

Venus and Jupiter in Conjunction 15MAR2012
'Conjunction of Glory as seen from Southern Germany' by Robert Blasius. #VenusJupiter
Astronomers Without Borders (AWB) http://www.astronomerswithoutborders.org/

Venus and Jupiter will be in conjunction on March 15th, 2012, passing within 3° of each other. The two planets have been getting closer and closer in the sky for the last month, and now it’s time to see them side-by-side. Venus is the higher, brighter object, and Jupiter is the lower dimmer one.

Of course, Venus and Jupiter aren’t actually close to one another in the sky. They’re really separated by millions of kilometres. But from our perspective here on Earth, we see the two objects closely lined up. That’s a conjunction. And in case you’re wondering, the conjunction will be visible from everywhere on Earth As a special bonus, the planet Mars is also high and bright in the sky, visible as that bright red “star” further to the East, Mars recently reached its closest point to Earth, known as opposition. Mars won’t be this close and bright for two more years. The sky show will continue, and on March 25th, 2012, the New Moon will join the pair again to create a triple conjunction. Another great photo opportunity. Although 3° sounds close, they can actually get much closer. In October 26, 2015, for example, the two planets will only be 1° apart.

We are organizing observation session, all members are invited, come down to our Zubair Camp, the event is free, we will start 6PM to 9PM. For location please see maps on our website.   http://www.dubaiastronomy.com/

Wish you Astronomical times.

Hasan Ahmad Al Hariri
