1 min Video Compilation of Perseid Meteors recorded on the evening of the 10th/ morning of the 11th of August 2010 for Meteorwatch ... youtube.com ************************************************************** Quick Perseid Summary by Bob Lunsford- posted on Meteorobs.org
Rates were unimpressive this morning (Aug 12) but bright meteors were aplenty. The best was a yellow -7 Perseid fireball that shot overhead and left a twisting train that lasted for nearly 30 seconds. Earlier, there was a -5 Perseid that shot down toward Polaris and left a 45 second train. Many others were of negative magnitudes, but not fireballs. An impressive -2 earthgrazing Eridanid was a highlight of the night. I think the highlight of the night was an intense orange, -3 Alpha Capricornid, that lasted 3 seconds and fragmented toward the end of its flight. Data will follow.... ******************************************************

PERSEID METEOR SHOWER: The annual Perseid meteor shower is underway. Earth is passing through a wide stream of debris from Comet Swift-Tuttle, and each time a fleck of comet dust hits Earth's atmosphere--flash!--there is a meteor. Forecasters say the shower will peak on Thursday, August 12th, and Friday, August 13th. You can see Perseids flitting across the sky at any time between about 10 pm on Thursday evening and sunrise on Friday morning. Observers who get away from city lights can expect to count dozens of meteors per hour, especially during the dark hours before dawn.
